October Theme Day!

This month's theme day is "Cemetaries/Tombstones." At first I had the horrid idea of taking a photograph of Tombstone brand frozen pizza, but then I saw the first major Halloween display of the season at a house a couple of doors down from my BFFs home. I know it's not a real cemetary and all the tombstones are fake, but the whole reason for the topic of this month's theme is because October is Halloween month. What better way to celebrate my favorite holiday than putting up a photo of pretty good decoration?

Don't forget to vote on the poll of what I should show for my 100th photo. I know that more than 5 people visit this blog daily!!! Come on guys, this is your chance to have imput on what you see!

Edit: A most sincere thank you to my most recent donator (sp?)!

Also, there were 102 blogs participating in theme day when I got the list, so try to visit some of them!

Hi, Soosh. I just voted for "other" in your poll. Ya gotta get in the car and get out of Brentwood! And more than Wentzville, which is a big highway junction with a big GM plant and occasionally some pirate wannabes. Geez, there's so much out and about. You have a great eye. Look further.

Oh do I know it. I just haven't had much time with my boy and studying and school. I'd like to try to get somewhere new at least once every week or two. It is my goal. Hopefully it'll work out more often.

Got any suggestions on where I could go? I know there's lots of places around that I'd love to go photograph, I just like suggestions!

Good grief. Do people go as mad about Halloween decorations as they do about Christmas? It's a non-event here except for a few commerical interests' efforts to get kids hyped up about it! (and sell more crap)

Very funny though!

I wonder if there are any RIP gravestones in cemeteries. Very humerous photo for this theme.

the monotone color is a great idea for this shot. I'm glad you didn't go with the pizza photo :D

Great choice Soosha! Halloween was never a big thing either in France, but then it became more and more commercialized. Now I think it has gone back to nothing again.

Do many people put up displays like this one? It's really interesting for me, because much like Sally said, it's a non-event here in South Africa too. It's possible that one or two nightclubs might organise Halloween parties (I've never been to one), but other than that it's really not observed at all. I didn't realise that people actually decorated their houses for the season.

ha, ha! This is fun.

I just voted in your poll too...apparently I'm one of the few who want you to do something goofy! However, that doesn't surprise me! :-) Happy Theme Day!

Hey, something different here and funny. Like that you published the photo in sepia - even more real.

Well, it's realistic and creative. Not sure I want Halloween to catch on that much here now though! :)

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement everyone, and thanks to those of you who've taken the poll!

For those of you who were asking: Yes, Halloween is just as big and commericalized as Christmas is around here. Personally I try not to spend too much buying into the commercialism and prefer to just have fun with the spirit of the season instead. I will admit I am plenty guilty of buying the commercial stuff, though.

Something I consider to be a bright side of it all, however, is the many Pagan groups around St. Louis who celebrate Halloween for what it originally was: a Pagan holiday. And just to clear up any misconceptions, Pagans are not the "devil worshippers" that most Christians are taught to believe they are. If you take the time to do some research you'll likely find that the history of Pagan religions is just as interesting as the history of any other religion. Of course there is some bad, but there is also much good. Again, just like the hostory of any other religion.

And that ends my quest against religious intolerance speech for today. Thank you.

Soosh - you asked for a few suggestions. Here are some that are not too far away and that you could visit with your son:

Outdoor sculpture in Clayton.

Soulard Market on Saturday morning.

Metrolink.

Kirkwood Farmers Market or just interesting stuff in downtown Kirkwood. Maybe you could get the Amtrak stopping on its way in from KC.

Laumeier Sculpture Park.

Manchester Road in downtown Maplewood as the sun is setting (do you have a tripod?). Or maybe inside Schlafly Bottleworks.

The atriums inside the Galleria.

That new phony baloney center across Brentwood from the Galleria that's supposed to look like an old NYC street.

Highway 40 construction chaos, particularly the I 170 interchange.

I'm sure you can think of many more. I'd love to see the results when go take your camera exploring.

Funny photo. It is a good way to "de-dramatize" the topic.

Thank you for your visit on my blog.

Where's your poll listed? I was thinking Halloween too, but I see others thought real cemeteries.

lv2scpbk said...

Oops! I noticed the poll in the corner after I left the comment. I think whatever you want but voted something funny. Could always use a laugh.

This has been the best one of the day for me...you've brought laughter to a grave day!

I'm so glad to see a Halloween yard display! I was wondering if one would show up for theme day. I think it's fitting that it came from the heartland of America, don't you?

I saw your name at my blog, but no comment was there. Come back some time, OK? Thanks.

Lynette said...

About the 100th post, I voted other and think you should find something in your own neighborhood that says to you, This is where I live, I'm proud to be here, and this is one of the reasons why!

Lynette said...

I'm a big ol' dummy! I see your sweet comment about the Stephens. Blame it on my nearly 60-year-old eyes/brain/whatever! Sorry.

Ming_the_Merciless said...

Brilliant capture! I wish there were Halloween decorations out in my neighborhood already.

Very funny! I like it, it's sort of like gallows humor, because we all know we're going to end up there.

We were with our grandkids yesterday hunting for halloween costumes (have to buy early because they live 400 miles away) -- from what I saw, Halloween is going to be creepy this year.

Oooh! Yay creepy! I love creepy. I suppose that's because my mom let me read Stephen King and watch Hellraiser at a young age.

Happy trick-or-treating with your grandkids! I inititally thought I'd be in school on Halloween night, but that got changed, so I've very excited I get to take my son out! He's excited too, he's Spiderman.

Your photo is the most "on theme" photo of the theme day. However it was too early for me to get into the Halloween sprit.
